“No,goback,”saidPuddleglu“Wemaypickupsomeinformation,andweneedallwecanget.IamsurethatQueenisawitchandanenemy.AndthoseEarthmenwouldknockusontheheadassoonaslookatus.There’sastrongersmellofdangerandliesandmagicandtreasonaboutthislandthanI’veeversmelledbefore.Weneedtokeepoureyesandearsopen.”

Theywentbackdownthecorridorandgentlypushedthedooropen.“It’sallright,”saidScrubb,meaningthattherewerenoEarthmenabout.Thentheyallcamebackintotheroomwheretheyhadsupped.

Themaindoorwasnowshut,concealingthecurtainbetweenwhichtheyhadfirstentered.TheKnightwasseatedinacurioussilverchair,towhichhewasboundbyhisankles,hisknees,hiselbows,hiswrists,andhiswaist.Therewassweatonhisforeheadandhisfacewasfilledwithanguish.

TheKnightwasmoaning.Hisfacewasaspaleasputty,andhewrithedinhisbonds.Andwhetherbecauseshewassorryforhim,orforsomeotherreason,Jillthoughtthathelookedanicersortofmanthanhehadlookedbefore.
