Immediatelytheskybecamefullofshootingstars.Evenoneshootingstarisafinethingtosee;buttheseweredozens,andthenscores,andthenhundreds,tillitwaslikesilverrain:anditwentonandon.Andwhenithadgoneonforsomewhile,oneortwoofthembegantothinkthattherewasanotherdarkshapeagainsttheskyaswellasthegiant’s.Itwasinadifferentplace,rightoverhead,upintheveryroofoftheskyasyoumightcallit.“Perhapsitisacloud,”thoughtEdmund.Atanyrate,therewerenostarsthere:justblackness.Butallaround,thedownpourofstarswenton.Andthenthestarlesspatchbegantogrow,spreadingfurtherandfurtheroutfromthecentreofthesky.Andpresentlyaquarterofthewholeskywasblack,andthenahalf,andatlasttherainofshootingstarswasgoingononlylowdownnearthehorizon.

Withathrillofwonder(andtherewassometerrorinittoo)theyallsuddenlyrealizedwhatwashappening.Thespreadingblacknesswasnotacloudatall:itwassimplyemptiness.Theblackpartoftheskywasthepartinwhichtherewerenostarsleft.Allthestarswerefalling:Aslanhadcalledthemhome.

Thelastfewsecondsbeforetherainofstarshadquiteendedwereveryexciting.StarsbeganfallingallroundtheButstarsinthatworldarenotthegreatflamingglobestheyareinours.Theyarepeople(EdmundandLucyhadoncemetone).Sonowtheyfoundshowersofglitteringpeople,allwithlonghairlikeburningsilverandspearslikewhite-hotmetal,rushingdowntothemoutoftheblackair,swifterthanfallingstones.Theymadeahissingnoiseastheylandedandburntthegrass.Andallthesestarsglidedpastthemandstoodsomewherebehind,alittletotheright.

Thiswasagreatadvantage,becauseotherwise,nowthattherewerenostarsinthesky,everythingwouldhavebeencompletelydarkandyoucouldhaveseennothing.Asitwas,thecrowdofstarsbehindthemcastafierce,whitelightovertheirshoulders.TheycouldseemileuponmileofNarnianwoodsspreadoutbeforethem,lookingasiftheywerefloodlit.Everybushandalmosteverybladeofgrasshaditsblackshadowbehindit.Theedgeofeveryleafstoodoutsosharpthatyou’dthinkyoucouldcutyourfingeronit.

Onthegrassbeforethemlaytheirownshadows.ButthegreatthingwasAslan’sshadow.Itstreamedawaytotheirleft,enormousandveryterrible.Andallthiswasunderaskythatwouldnowbestarlessforever.

Thelightfrombehindthem(andalittletotheirright)wassostrongthatitlitupeventheslopesoftheNorthernMoors.Somethingwasmovingthere.EnormousanimalswerecrawlingandslidingdownintoNarnia:greatdragonsandgiantlizardsandfeatherlessbirdswithwingslikebats’wings.Theydisappearedintothewoodsandforafewminutestherewassilence.Thentherecame-atfirstfromveryfaroff-soundsofwailingandthen,fromeverydirection,arustlingandapatteringandasoundofwings.Itcamenearerandnearer.Soononecoulddistinguishthescamperoflittlefeetfromthepaddingofbigpaws,andtheclack-clackoflightlittlehoofsfromthethunderofgreatones.Andthenonecouldseethousandsofpairsofeyesgleaming.Andatlast,outoftheshadowofthetrees,racingupthehillfordearlife,bythousandsandbymillions,cameallkindsofcreatures-TalkingBeasts,Dwarfs,Satyrs,Fauns,Giants,Calormenes,menfromArchenland,Monopods,andstrangeunearthlythingsfromtheremoteislandsoftheunknownWesternlands.AndalltheseranuptothedoorwaywhereAslanstood.

Thispartoftheadventurewastheonlyonewhichseemedratherlikeadreamatthetimeandratherhardtorememberproperlyafterwards.Especially,onecouldn’tsayhowlongithadtaken.Sometimesitseemedtohavelastedonlyafewminutes,butatothersitfeltasifitmighthavegoneonforyears.Obviously,unlesseithertheDoorhadgrownverymuchlargerorthecreatureshadsuddenlygrownassmallasgnats,acrowdlikethatcouldn’teverhavetriedtogetthroughit.Butnoonethoughtaboutthatsortofthingatthetime.

“Furtherinandhigherup!”criedRoonwitandthunderedawayinagalloptotheWest.Andthoughtheydidnotunderstandhim,thewordssomehowsetthemtinglingallover.TheBoargruntedatthemcheerfully.TheBearwasjustgoingtomutterthathestilldidn’tunderstand,whenhecaughtsightofthefruit-treesbehindtheHewaddledtothosetreesasfastashecouldandthere,nodoubt,foundsomethingheunderstoodverywell.ButtheDogsremained,waggingtheirtails,andPogginremained,shakinghandswitheveryoneandgrinningalloverhishonestface.AndJewelleanedhissnowywhiteheadovertheKing’sshoulderandtheKingwhisperedinJewel’sear.TheneveryoneturnedhisattentionagaintowhatcouldbeseenthroughtheDoorway.

Atlastsomethingwhite-along,levellineofwhitenessthatgleamedinthelightofthestandingstars-camemovingtowardsthemfromtheEasternendoftheworld.

Andoutthereitbegantogrowlight.Astreakofdrearyanddisastrousdawnspreadalongthehorizon,andwidenedandgrewbrighter,tillintheendtheyhardlynoticedthelightofthestarswhostoodbehindtheAtlastthesuncameup.Whenitdid,theLordDigoryandtheLadyPollylookedatoneanotherandgavealittlenod:thosetwo,inadifferentworld,hadonceseenadyingsun,andsotheyknewatoncethatthissunalsowasdying.Itwasthreetimes-twentytimes-asbigasitoughttobe,andverydarkred.AsitsraysfelluponthegreatTime-giant,heturnedredtoo:andinthereflectionofthatsunthewholewasteofshorelesswaterslookedlikeblood.
