“LordKing!dearLordKing,”saidtheirshrillvoices,“wearesosorryforyou.Wedaren’tuntieyoubecauseAslanmightbeangrywithus.Butwe’vebroughtyouyoursupper.”
AtoncethefirstMouseclimbednimblyuptillhewasperchedontheropethatboundTirian’schestandwaswrinklinghisbluntnoseinfrontofTirian’sface.ThenthesecondMouseclimbedupandhungonjustbelowthefirstMouse.Theotherbeastsstoodonthegroundandbeganhandingthingsup.
“Drink,Sire,andthenyou’llfindyouareabletoeat,”saidthetopmostMouse,andTirianfoundthatalittlewoodencupwasbeingheldtohislips.Itwasonlythesizeofaneggcupsothathehadhardlytastedthewineinitbeforeitwasempty.ButthentheMousepasseditdownandtheothersre-filleditanditwaspassedupagainandTirianemptieditasecondtime.Inthiswaytheywentontillhehadquiteagooddrink,whichwasallthebetterforcominginlittledoses,forthatismorethirst-quenchingthanonelongdraught.

ThenTirianfeltsomethinglikeatinyspongedabbinghisface,anditwasmostrefreshing.
“Littlefriends,”saidTirian,“howcanIthankyouforallthis?”
“Youneedn’t,youneedn’t,”saidthelittlevoices.“Whatelsecouldwedo?Wedon’twantanyotherKing.We’reyourpeople.IfitwasonlytheApeandtheCalormeneswhowereagainstyouwewouldhavefoughttillwewerecutintopiecesbeforewe’dletthemtieyouup.Wewould,wewouldindeed.Butwecan’tgoagainstAslan.”
“DoyouthinkitreallyisAslan?”askedtheKing.
“Ohyes,yes,”saidtheRabbit.“Hecameoutofthestablelastnight.Weallsawhi”
“Whatwashelike?”saidtheKing.
“Likeaterrible,greatLion,tobesure,”saidoneoftheMice.
“AndyouthinkitisreallyAslanwhoiskillingtheWood-NymphsandmakingyouallslavestotheKingofCalormen?”
“Ah,that’sbad,isn’tit?”saidthesecondMouse.“Itwouldhavebeenbetterifwe’ddiedbeforeallthisbegan.Butthere’snodoubtaboutit.EveryonesaysitisAslan’sorders.Andwe’veseenhiWedidn’tthinkAslanwouldbelikethat.Why,we-wewantedhimtocomebacktoNarnia.”

“Goodnight,goodnight,”saidtheBeasts,rubbingtheirnosesagainsthisknees.“Wewillcomeback-ifwecan.”Thentheyallpatteredawayandthewoodseemeddarkerandcolderandlonelierthanithadbeenbeforetheycame.
